Earlier this week I came across an atheist’s blog. Needless to say, it, like so many other atheist sites, did not defend the idea of “no God” as much as it just criticized and belittled Christianity. In fact his exact words about his blog were as follows “This blog should interest those who are questioning their faith in irrational belief systems and those who have already freed themselves from such silliness.” However, his blog entry caught my attention because of my research for my most recent sermon on Kindness.
He entitled it “Random acts of kindness … and not because the Bible tells you so”. In it he declared an instance where his wife had her Tim Horton’s coffee paid for by the car in front of her because “they just wanted to do something nice.” Well, this blogger decided he was going to do it too. Not because of the Bible or anything other than being nice. He finishes his blog by stating “It’s nice being nice for the sake of being nice … and not because the Bible tells you so.”
Well, it seems to me that all this man did was show/prove how God’s principles are true. God knows what gives us fulfillment and joy in this world, and when we follow His commands them we experience exactly what this blogger experienced. “It’s nice being nice for the sake of being nice”. But what he is missing, is the fullness of those actions when done within a relationship with Jesus Christ. When we have Christ, being nice becomes more than just nice, but becomes a modern day reminder of those “nice” things that Christ did for us.
